A closer look at Cardiologists

Cardiology is the study of disorders affecting the heart and blood vessels otherwise known as the circulatory system. Cardiologists are internal medicine doctors who treat diseases and disorders that impact the circulatory system. Cardiologists do not do the same thing as cardiac surgeons. They do not perform surgery. Rather, cardiac surgeons perform open heart surgery and cardiologists specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases non-surgically that affect the cardiovascular system.

Cardiologists may perform tests such as cardiac catheterizations or they may put in pacemakers, but every cardiologist is different. As specialists, cardiologists often focus intensively on certain areas of their field. For example, in order to do a cardiac catheterization, a cardiologist must go through special training in this technique. And some cardiologists specialize in diagnostics or the interpretation of ECGs or Echocardiograms. Most cardiologists can perform specialized skills such as exercise testing or cholesterol management however.

Cardiologists consult with the other doctors on a patient’s care team to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that takes the patient’s other diseases and disorders into consideration. In order to see a cardiologist, patients must generally be referred by another doctor. Usually, patients are referred to cardiologists by a general practitioner. The cardiologists chosen by the general practitioner will likely have special skills that are especially relevant to the patient’s presenting issues. The cardiologist may, in turn, refer patients to other specialists depending on the patient’s diagnosis.

What does a cardiologist do?

Cardiologists diagnose and treat diseases using a variety of techniques and technologies. They may perform tests such as an ECG, X-ray, or blood test or perform procedures such as heart catheterizations, pacemaker placement, or angioplasty.  They attempt to identify and then treat diseases that not only affect the heart, but the circulatory system as a whole, including the blood vessels (arteries and veins).

A typical exam by a cardiologist is likely to include checking your blood pressure, heart and lung sounds, weight, and blood pressure. After a patient is given a diagnosis, the doctor may prescribe medication, surgery, or lifestyle changes to treat the problem.

How are cardiologists trained?

Cardiologists follow different educational paths on their way to becoming specialists, but all of them must go through four years of medical school followed by three years of specialized training in internal medicine. Then, they go through an additional three years or more in specialized training to become cardiologists. Board certified cardiologists are doctors who have completed the requisite 10 years of clinical and educational preparation to pass a 2-day exam administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

When are patients referred to a cardiologist?

A general practitioner may refer a patient to a cardiologist when a patient has a significant heart condition or issues related to blood circulation. The following signs and symptoms may be indicative of a cardiovascular problem:

●       Chest pains

●       Shortness of breath

●       Dizziness

●       Heart murmurs on an ECG

The cardiologist will consider these symptoms and recommend additional tests to arrive at a final diagnosis. Then, he or she will advise the patient on treatment options and lifestyle changes to enhance heart health.

What to expect at your cardiology appointment:

Cardiologists regularly perform tests to determine the best treatment approach for patients. Below are some of the most common tests performed by cardiologists:

●       Exercise or Stress Test

Exercise tests are done to determine the health of the heart and its performance levels and limitations during stress.

●       Echocardiogram

An Echocardiogram or ECG is a test that’s done to to study the sounds the heart makes to better understand its structure and function.

●       Ambulatory Test

This test allows the doctor to look more closely at the heart’s rhythms to identify any abnormal activity.

●       Cardiac Catheterization

This is a test that allows the doctor to take pictures and then look directly at the heart to see if it is working properly, to check the electrical system of the heart muscle, and to remove any blockages. Some cardiologists do not perform catheterizations.

What does FACC mean?

The designation “FACC” means “Fellow of the American College of Cardiology”. Physicians who are elected to complete a fellowship (based on their excellent credentials or achievements or some other important contribution to cardiovascular medicine) get to put these letters behind their name to alert patients to their special competence and commitment to excellence.

Doctors who carry the FACC designation behind their name have pledged cooperation and loyalty to the attainment of the ideals professed by the college where they do their fellowship. The most important of these ideals is always to promote a high level of excellence in the field of cardiology.
