In order to help you make a more informed decision regarding your health, we put together this guide of the 10 Best Dentists in NYC Who Accept Medicaid

(Below is a list of doctors with different specialties who accept Medicaid)‍

Finding an excellent dentist with great reviews who also accepts Medicaid is a tall order in New York City, but believe it or not they do exist!

Dentists who accept Medicaid insurance are located in various areas of the city and below we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 dentists in NYC who accept Medicaid and ranked them to make your search easier. Read about each one to find the right dentist for you.

What do dentists do?

Dentists are medical doctors who diagnose and treat diseases involving the mouth, gums, and teeth. They play an important role in the overall provision of health because diseases, injuries, and disorders of the mouth structures and teeth can lead to poor health outcomes overall. The health of the mouth has an impact on the health of other areas of the body too. Dentists can help you take better care of your mouth, gums, and teeth through regular cleanings, check-ups, and treatments.

Dentists perform a variety of different procedures that are geared at helping patients achieve not only good oral health, but also a pleasing aesthetic to their smile.

Many dentists provide not only general dentistry services (tooth extractions, fillings, check-ups, and cleanings to name just a few), but also cosmetic dentistry services (including teeth whitening, Invisalign treatments, and dental implants). It’s common for dentists to provide education and advice to their patients about how to achieve better oral health and desirable cosmetic outcomes for their teeth.

Does New York Medicaid cover dental care?

New York state is required to provide dental benefits to all children who are covered by Medicaid, but adult dentistry is also covered as long as the benefits are provided for essential services only.

Treatment of baby teeth for children who are Medicaid recipients is one of the only childhood dental services that is not typically covered (without making a special appeal), but for adults in New York, Medicaid cannot be used to cover many dental services that may be covered in children.

Special rules and guidelines must be followed by the dentist you choose to work with to establish and execute a treatment plan for adult patients who are seeking dental care in New York City using their Medicaid plan.

To qualify for coverage under Medicaid, treatments often cover replacement, but not treatment of a diseased or injured tooth. Attempting to save a tooth through endodontic treatment is considered inappropriate by Medicaid if the prognosis for the tooth is questionable. In these cases, tooth extraction and replacement is generally required. If your dentist feels that treatment is the only viable thing to do, they will need to present your case to the Medicaid authorities.

Medicaid has special rules regarding benefits and coverage for endodontic (root canal) treatment. In some cases, root canal treatments are covered, but this is not always the case. If you need a diseased or injured tooth to receive a root canal because it is needed to secure a denture in your mouth, the NYS Medicaid Program may approve it, but otherwise, it may not be covered.

Adult patients who are approved for Medicaid may not be covered for treatment if the proposed treatment plan involves an excessive number of teeth, or if the tooth that needs treatment is not considered essential. Medicaid may require radiographic images and other diagnostic information to support the appropriateness of any given treatment and to establish the necessity of certain restorative procedures.

Adult patients who are covered by Medicaid in New York state and who require dental care may or may not receive benefits depending on their specific situation and health status.

The state of New York has some flexibility in determining which dental benefits are provided to their enrollees and many of these rules and regulations change from year-to-year. Most states do, however, provide emergency dental service coverage for adults.

Does New York Medicaid cover orthodontic procedures?

Medicaid only covers orthodontic procedures for children under the age of 21 years who have severe, handicapping orthodontic issues.

Malocclusions (an imperfect positioning of the teeth when the jaw is closed) is one of the only orthodontic diagnoses covered by Medicaid and it is limited to only three years of treatment plus one additional year of retention care. Children with a cleft palate may be approved for additional orthodontic treatment times under certain conditions.

New York Medicaid Coverage for Children

According to Medicaid rules and regulations, all child enrollees must receive dental screening and diagnostic and treatment benefits. Dental services covered by Medicaid minimally include the following:

·   Teeth restoration

·     Relief of dental pain

·     Treatment of dental infections

·   Maintenance of dental health

Any dental service that is medically necessary for a child, must be provided. The medical necessity of any given procedure, however, is determined by the state of New York. Any condition that is discovered during a check-up that requires treatment must be provided by the state, even if that procedure is not covered by the state’s Medicaid plan.

For children, dental services must be provided at regular intervals that are in line with reasonable standards of dental practice, or according to medical necessity. To determine medical necessity, your dentist may need to consult with state-recognized dental organizations that are knowledgeable about children’s dental needs.
