Get the care you need from a loved one, and they get paid!
To qualify, you need to be a Michigan resident, have Medicaid, and require help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or mobility. You must also be at least 18 years old and able to direct your own care—or have someone you trust who can do this for you.
No. Due to state regulations, Medicare alone does not make you eligible for family caregiver pay programs in Michigan. You must have Medicaid to qualify.
A caregiver must be at least 18 years old, eligible to work in the United States, and not excluded from the Medicaid program. Family members, including adult children or siblings, often qualify as long as they meet these basic requirements.
The Michigan Home Help Program, managed by the Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), helps people stay independent in their own homes instead of moving to a nursing facility. Through this program, family members, friends, or other trusted caregivers can be paid to provide care, easing financial stress while ensuring loved ones get safe, consistent support.
To qualify, the person receiving care must live in Michigan, be eligible for Medicaid, and need help with daily activities because of age, disability, or a medical condition. They’ll also need to complete an in-home needs assessment with an MDHHS specialist and have a physician’s statement confirming the medical necessity of care.
Yes. FreedomCare is available in Michigan to help families access programs like the Home Help Program so caregivers can be paid for the care they already provide. We guide you through eligibility, paperwork, and enrollment so you and your loved one get the support you deserve without the confusion.
Caregiver pay rates in Michigan vary based on location and the number of hours approved by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Caregivers are paid hourly, with hours determined during the in-home needs assessment. While it may not replace a full-time income, the pay can make it easier for families to care for loved ones without as much financial strain.
