The caregiver must be a family member who lives in the same home as the participant, either in their home or the caregiver’s. Spouses are not eligible to be paid caregivers in Georgia.
Georgia allows you to choose a family member to be your caregiver if you qualify for Medicaid and meet the program’s requirements. You cannot choose your spouse, legal guardian or friend. You must live in Georgia with the caregiver (whether in your home or theirs), need help with daily activities, and either be over 65 or between 21–64 with a recognized disability. It’s also important to know that Medicare alone does not qualify you — Medicaid is required.
